About Tracie Thompson
I grew up, essentially, in a swamp. This is not a bad thing; I was on the rural outskirts of Fort Myers, Florida, with an incredible array of life all around me. Fish, plants, birds, domestic animals like cattle and horses; we had cats and dogs, and it was my job to care for the chickens in the big pen out back.
My father was a photographer and naturalist, so I absorbed the notions of composition early, and I had an innate need to imagine the stories behind everything I saw. Whether it was an abandoned house, a railroad bridge, or a wild lily, I was intrigued and felt there was a meaning attached. I suppose I still do. I explore the world every chance I get, and have studied as far afield as Paris.
You'll notice a number of horses in my art. My love of them is probably in my blood on both sides. Dad's Florida pioneer family were guides and ranchers, horsemen from way back; Mom's ancestry were all Polish, from a nation famous for its love of the horse and its expertise at breeding them. What I know is that I still recall the first ride I took when I was five years old, and that I have never been the same. I have one now, a gentle giant of a mare who often serves as a model for my work.
